Mark Greenstein of Ivy Bound recommends SAT taking tips to students

“Colleges and universities use students` standardized test results as a key part of the admissions process,” said Lee Stetson, former dean of admissions at the University of Pennsylvania and college admissions expert. “They use the highest scores reported when evaluating a student.”

After five semesters of high school, grade point average is largely set. The best way for the students to improve their college credentials is by improving their SAT Scores.

SAT test taking tips provided by Mark Greenstein of Ivy Bound Test Prep

  1. Read directions in advance so that you do not waste your time reading the test directions on the test day.
  2. Take the exam multiple times as most colleges look for the best score.
  3. Read the question carefully without assuming anything of your own.
  4. First, answer the easy questions. Mark the questions that you skip so that you can return to them later.
  5. Solve the problems at the best pace you can.

Scams Targeting Students

The saying ”It takes a thief to steal from a thief” seems to gel well with a group of internet scammers targeting students who illegally download music, books, and video.

Prosecutors say there are at least six common scams students should watch out for – fake scholarship promises, dodgy student loans, untrustworthy counselors, illegal downloads, diploma mills, and term paper and other cheating supplies.

The Chronicle of Higher Education has reported on an apparently bogus collections agency that sent out letters to Bucknell students demanding US$500 to settle the students’ alleged illegal downloads.

US Colleges dropping SAT as requirement for admission

Recent validity studies have shown that scores on standardized tests, including the SAT and ACT, are no better at predicting success in college than high school grades and achievement tests in individual subjects.

Holy Cross and Worcester Polytechnic Institute are among 23 accredited four-year colleges and universities in Massachusetts and more than 800 nationwide that have dropped ACT and SAT requirements. Assumption College in Worcester has dropped the SAT Test requirement beginning with students applying now for the fall of 2010. The trend to de-emphasize admissions scores is likely to continue accelerating. Critics of the SAT Exam say that transcripts are a much better way to represent academic success in high school to the admissions committee.

  1. Students are not allowed to take more than three SAT subject tests on a single test date.
  2. When registering for the test, students should indicate which subject test they plan to take. However, they can change their option until the test date.

New SAT Score Reporting Policy

Until now, all the SAT scores had to be sent to the admission committee. Score Choice is the new score reporting feature that allows student to select which scores

they wish to send to colleges by test date for the SAT and by individual test for SAT Subject Tests. This provides flexibility to students by allowing them to send best score from a given test date. However, scores of individual section from different sitting can not be sent. For example, it is not possible to send June’s Critical Reading score and October’s Mathematics score. Score Choice is an optional and if it is not chosen all scores will be sent automatically. Each university has its own score report policy. Students are instructed to follow different score practice for each college they wish to apply. Score Choice is available to all students via the Web or by calling Customer Service toll free. Students can send any or all scores to a college on a single report without bearing any additional cost to send more than one score.

The new score reporting policy will alleviate fear that a low score on an early attempt at the SAT will hurt chances of getting into a college.
