What are the SATs?

The SATs are standardized tests. They are used by most colleges in the United States to make admission decisions, which means that if you're an American high-school student, or if you're thinking of studying abroad, you'll need to get a good SAT score. High SAT scores can also help you get scholarships.

The SATs contain questions about mathematics, critical reading, and writing. This makes sense, since math and English skills are necessary for your education.

The SATs are a big milestone in your quest for higher education, so it is highly important that you study and are well-prepared to write them. This is especially important since colleges get to see all previous scores, so although you can always retake the SATs, messing up once won't look good.

Is there anything else I should know?

The level of material corresponds to a standard grade 12 level. Note that since the test is used by colleges and universities all over the United States, international students writing the SATs should generally not be at a disadvantage in terms of material. (One small exception is the fact that US happens to dislike the metric system, Celsius, and other logical measurement units, so you may have to brush up on that. They also tend to spell things differently, like color and colour).

Be aware that the SATs contain 10 sections- 3 of each of the 3 topics, and one "unscored" section, which is used to ensure the test is objective (you won't know which section is unscored, so you will have to write 10 sections). The first and last sections are never unscored though, and the first section always contains the essay question.

All information, lessons, and tests, as well as active SAT experts are available to answer your questions through community Discussions. All this is available freely to members of the LearnHub SAT Preparation community. So, why not:

    Dear spiyr,

You should target a score of 2300+ to stand a chance for scholarship. Also, scholarships are not given just based on your SAT score. Your academic performance, LORs, SOPs, your intended area of study, the resources at the universities that you apply to all these are the factors that influence your chances of getting a scholarship.

Well, the information above should get you started- going over the math, reading and writing lessons and quizzes listed will give you a clear picture of the material covered. Once you have that, you should practice some more with our Question Bank, and then work over your weak areas using more resources. Some more good lessons to get you started: The SAT Study Plan and All About the SAT.

    Good luck!

In education systems where people go to college after the 12th grade, most students will write the SAT during grade 12, so that they can get accepted to US colleges before deadlines close. Some choose to write the SAT after grade 11 so that they get enough time in case they decide to later retake the test and improve their score. Once you get an SAT score you can apply to colleges in the United States and begin your international education experience.
