Where do we wish to study? (Discussion)

acrosstheuniverse saidTue, 20 May 2008 14:08:21 -0000 ( Link )

Being a student myself, I’m interested to see where all of you aspire to study. Are there any schools in particular you’d like to attend? Or any specific programs you’re interested in?

Let’s start this discussion!

You never know, you may find someone who has the same educational aspirations as you! Plus, we all know that the SATs and the practice going into them are going to help you reach those goals!

    Hey souradeep and everyone- check out this SAT score ranges lesson to see what SAT score you need to get into top American universities.

    Also, a lot of people dream of studying at MIT or Harvard… I think it’s probably overrated. I’d rather study at my great Canadian university that’s small, quiet and friendly than at a large, fiercely competitive American university where you study all day with no life. It depends on what person you are though, I guess. After all, if you’ve got a degree or professional designation, you’re top of your class, and you’ve got great people skills and come off well in interviews, does it really matter whether you’re a Harvard grad or a Waterloo one?

    What do you think people?

    Hi cappy_bg,

    You can check out Ohio Wesleyan University’s school page right on LearnHub now. It is known for its strong liberal arts background and dedicated faculty. Although classified as a small college, it is increasing its student body as well as academic reputation keep rising. Referring back to your first question about a microbiology, they do have a program there that would suit your needs. As well, they’re open to international applicants.

    As JohnPhillipGreen said, the school finder will be growing, so keep your eye on it. :)

    hi guys I`m afraid it`s me again and I have few more questions.I saw the page of McGill university in Canada but there are some things I don`t understand.It says that SAT subject tests are required for non canadian students.If so how many do they require?Is it possible they to give me a scholarship which covers most of my needs because my parents can`t pay for my education?

    thanks

    I was surprised to learn that a Canadian university uses the SAT for international admission, but it’s true… however, it’s true only for US students and international students in US programs abroad.

    McGill requires the regular new SAT (as oppose of the old one) plus 2 subject SATs, which depend on the faculty you’re applying for. For example, Engineering requires a math one and either chemistry or physics. For more details, look here.

    For international students outside the US, you should look here, admission is based primarily on grades, but is very competitive.

    Entrance scholarships to McGill range from $3,000 to $10,000, and international students with high averages may be eligible. Here are more details.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Maria,

    I’ve found some more detailed requirements for the science program at McGill since you’ve indicated that you’re interested in studying microbiology, genetics or bacteriology. For science respectively they indicate that you must have…

    • Pre-calculus (functions)
    • At least two of biology, chemistry or physics
    • SAT IIs must include at least two different subjects from: biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics.

    Here are the requirements for the SAT I and SAT II for the subjects I’m guessing you may be interested in taking…

    SAT I (taken after March 2005)
    Min. Score Range
    * Critical Reading 620 – 650
    * Writing 620 – 650
    * Mathematics: (Engineering and Architecture programs) 600 – 640
    * Mathematics: (other programs) 560 – 630

    SAT II
    Subject Min.Score Range
    * Writing (prior to March 2005) 610 – 650
    * Math I 570 – 630
    * Math II/IIC 540 – 630
    * Biology 590 – 630
    * Ecological Biology 590 – 630
    * Molecular Biology 590 – 630
    * Chemistry 580 – 630
    * Physics 580 – 630

    And since you’ve already taken the ACT test, you can compare your scores to that required by McGill here…

    ACT
    * Composite Score 26 – 28
    * English 24 – 25
    * Math 24 – 25
    * Reading 24 – 25
    * Science Reasoning 24 – 25

    Hope this helps! Let us know if there’s anything else you’re confused about.

    According to McGill’s contact page, the Enrolment Services’ email is admissions@mcgill.ca, and the Scholarships Office is scholarships@mcgill.ca. If you’re looking for specific faculty emails, you should email the Enrolment Services and ask them for it, they’ll be happy to refer you to the right address.
